This was our most successful garden and won, not only gold but also best Courtyard Garden and once again the BBC RHS People’s award for best small garden in Show.
Our garden is based on a 1930’s to 1940’s farmyard. The overall purpose of the garden is to create a sense of nostalgia while incorporating three other main elements which are the preservation of heritage fruit and vegetable varieties and the use of indigenous wildflowers and cultivated perennials to create a diverse range of plants that will support wildlife such as birds and insects. The final element is the protection of the environment by using entirely reclaimed or recycled materials. We have an old red brick wall, lean-to shelter, stable block path and milk churn water feature together with a number of old tools and paraphernalia adding to the period feel.
